Having a clean air duct is essential for your HVAC system to work efficiently and circulate clean air throughout your home. This can improve indoor air quality and help reduce allergens, dust, and other potential contaminants. A dirty air duct can also cause a musty smell in your home. It is important to clean the air ducts regularly to improve indoor air quality and air conditioning efficiency. The goal of cleaning air ducts is to disinfect, disinfect, and deodorize them to eliminate build-up.
The EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only when necessary. However, the EPA recommends that if you have a furnace, stove, or fireplace that burns fuel, it be inspected for proper functioning and maintained before each heating season to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. As more contaminants accumulate in the air duct, the worse the air quality in your home will be. Manufacturers of products marketed to coat and encapsulate duct surfaces claim that these sealants prevent dust and dirt particles from inside air ducts from being released into the air. To find companies that offer duct cleaning services, see the section on duct cleaning in the Yellow Pages or contact the National Association of Air Duct Cleaners (NADCA).By cleaning your air duct system, you also improve air quality in your home or business to create a cleaner, healthier environment.
However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed with fiberglass panels or sheet metal ducts lined on the inside with a fiberglass duct lining. The most effective way to avoid contamination is to prevent water and dirt from entering the system (see How to Prevent Duct Contamination). Most organizations that deal with duct cleaning, including the EPA, NADCA, NAIMA, and the National Association of Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors (SMACNA), do not currently recommend the routine use of sealants to encapsulate contaminants in any type of duct. The NADCA general rule for consumers is that “if their air ducts look dirty, they probably are, and dirty air conditioning systems must be inspected and cleaned by an accredited and certified HVAC professional. As long as the cleaning is done correctly, there is no evidence to suggest that such cleaning is harmful. When service providers come to your home, ask them to show you the contamination that would justify cleaning the ducts. That's why it's important to commit to a good preventive maintenance program to minimize duct contamination.
